→ When You Add -te iru, the Verb Changes to
   the Progressive Tense or Indicates a State or Condition

  Kare wa eigo wo hanasite iru ‘He is speaking English’ is an expression indicating either a state or something that is in progress. In order to express a state or something in progress, add the verb ending -te-iru or -de-iru. Inflection is in the same as for the past tense.

  In this way, you can express state or things in progress, no matter what the subject is.
